The Three Faces of Work-Family Conflict
The Poor, the Professionals, and the Missing Middle
Work-family conflict is much higher in the
United States than
elsewhere in the developed world. One reason is that
Americans work longer hours than workers in most other
developed countries, including Japan, where there is a word, karoshi,
for “death by overwork.” The typical American middle-income
family put in an average of 11 more hours a week in 2006
than it did in 1979. Not only do American families work

Jobless Rate Falls,
Masking Negative Statistics
Drops in January from 10% to 9.7%, lowest since August
The surprising drop in the national unemployment rate to 9.7
percent in January, the lowest level since August, masked
some disturbing statistics. While the unemployment rate for
white people declined from 9 percent to 8.7 percent, the
rate for black people grew from 16.2 percent to 16.5
percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday. And
while the number of jobs lost has been declining from more
than 700,000 a month in the first quarter of 2009 (according
to revisions posted yesterday) to 20,000 last month, there
is a record …

Barrels of acid spilled inside an 18-wheeler on a Dallas freeway that is
